The rich traditions and cultural vibrancy of Jagadhatri Puja, honoring the protector of the universe, Goddess Jagadhatri.
The important Hindu festival known as Jagadhatri Puja (देवग्नरी: जगद्धात्रि, Bengali: জগদ্ধাত্রী) is mostly observed in the Hooghly area of West Bengal. The festival honors Goddess Jagadhatri, who is considered to be the universe’s nurturer and protector and is a manifestation of the Divine Mother. “Jagadhatri” means “Supporter of the Universe,” highlighting her function in preserving the peace and safety of the cosmos.
Although Jagadhatri Puja has ancient origins, Maharaja Kirtchandra Roy of the Bardhaman princely state promoted it in the 18th century. This festival, which is held in the Hindu month of Kartika (October–November) after Durga Puja and Kali Puja, is revered as a reincarnation of Goddess Durga. The event pays homage to the feminine divine spirit that protects and nurtures creation.
Festivities and Customs
Large, intricately constructed idols of Goddess Jagadhatri, clad in scarlet, embellished with decorations, and perched atop a tiger, are installed as part of the celebrations. The goddess’s right hands are holding a chakra (discus) and a five-headed arrow, while her left hands are holding a conch and bow. The rites start with the idol being ceremoniously bathed, and then the bhog offering is made, which includes flowers, incense, and traditional meals.
Community and Cultural Involvement
The colorful processions and cultural activities, like as plays, dances, and musical performances, are among the main attractions of Jagadhatri Puja. People celebrate the goddess’ majesty by getting together for festive gatherings and community feasts. Before the idol is submerged in a process akin to Durga Puja, devotees chant passages from the Chandi, a sacred scripture.
Venues for Important Events
The main cities where Jagadhatri Puja is held with fervor are Kolkata, Bardhaman, and Howrah. A few Odisha regions also take part, carrying on the custom in their local communities.
From its historic beginnings, Jagadhatri Puja has developed into one of Bengal’s most cherished celebrations, fusing religious fervor with vibrant cultural displays.
