The British-Indian director Sandhya Suri’s Santosh has won awards for Best British Independent Film and Best Screenplay, demonstrating Suri’s ability to tell compelling social stories on screen. With a premise that delivers both a compelling narrative and a commentary on gender and power dynamics, this film, which is set in India, focuses on a woman managing her career as a police officer in a culture that is controlled by men.

Payal Kapadia’s film All We Imagine as Light has received nominated for Best International Independent Film. The film, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes, delves into the complicated lives of Kerala nurses working at a hospital in Mumbai, fusing personal and cultural hardships into a moving, close-knit story. This BIFA accolade follows All We Imagine as Light‘s captivating performances at other major film festivals, which further solidified its standing as a notable piece of international cinema.

Kneecap, Love Lies Bleeding, and The Outrun are among the other formidable competitors for Best British Independent Film at the BIFA 2024 ceremony, which is scheduled for December 8 in London.
