India Crush Bangladesh by 280 Runs in Opening Test
Chennai, September 22, 2024 – India delivered a commanding performance to defeat Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
After winning the toss and opting to field, Bangladesh struggled to contain the Indian batsmen. India posted a formidable 376 runs in their first innings, with significant contributions from Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. Pant, making a remarkable comeback after a long injury layoff, scored a century, while Gill added a solid 82.
In response, Bangladesh was bundled out for just 149 runs, thanks to a stellar bowling performance led by Jasprit Bumrah. India chose not to enforce the follow-on and declared their second innings at 287/4, setting Bangladesh a daunting target of 515 runs.
Bangladesh’s second innings saw a brief resistance from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan, but it was Ravichandran Ashwin who stole the show. Ashwin, who went wicketless in the first innings, took six wickets for 88 runs in the second, dismantling the Bangladesh batting lineup. Ravindra Jadeja provided excellent support, claiming three wickets.
Ashwin’s exceptional performance earned him the Player of the Match award. The second Test of the series will be played in Kanpur from September 27.
India’s comprehensive victory sets the tone for the series, showcasing their dominance in both batting and bowling departments.
