State to Host Pous Mela in Santiniketan Despite Visva-Bharati and Trust's Opt-Out

On Friday, Bidhan Ray, the district magistrate of Birbhum, said that the state government will arrange Pous Mela in Santiniketan, because Visva-Bharati and Santiniketan Trust had chosen not to participate in the festival this year.

This year, the Pous Mela will be hosted by the state government. We'll go toward Visva-Bharati for the Pous Mela ground first.

Following a meeting with representatives of the district government, members of the Santiniketan Trust, and other fair stakeholders, Ray said, "If they refuse, we will organise the event following the tradition at Dakbungalow ground like the past two years."

On December 23, which marks the seventh Pous in the Bengali calendar, the government's Pous Mela is anticipated to start and last for five days.

At the meeting held on Friday at the subdivisional officer of Bolpur's office were Minister Chandranath Sinha, chairman of Birbhum zilla parishad Kajal Sheikh, police personnel, and members of the non-governmental organization Bangla Sanskriti Mancha.

A steering committee was established by the district government to oversee the fair's organization.

Visva-Bharati will make a decision only after obtaining the proposal from the district government, according to a senior university official.

The honorary secretary of the Santiniketan Trust, Anil Konar, declared: "We will definitely participate in the Pous Mela organized by the government."

Together, Visva-Bharati and Santiniketan Trust had decided not to host the customary yearly celebration due to a number of reasons, including "time constraints."
