Cheers Erupt as Kanchenjungha Stadium in Silguri Roars Back to Life: Sports Triumph Over Political Turmoil

Siliguri, India: After a period of political controversy and much-needed renovation, the iconic Kanchenjungha Stadium in Silguri is poised to reclaim its crown as the city's vibrant sports hub. Mayor Gautam Deb announced on Monday that the ground will be ready for sporting action from Saturday, kicking off with the two-day state veterans' athletics championship.

The news brought joyous relief to sports enthusiasts who had witnessed the stadium become a political battleground last week. The state government's decision to host a public service program at the ground, attended by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, drew ire from sections of the community who pointed out the ongoing football league's disruption. This sparked protests led by opposition BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh and other leaders.

However, with the political dust settling, the focus has shifted back to where it belongs: sports. The veterans' athletics championship marks a symbolic first step in the stadium's revival. "The ground is almost ready for games," declared Mayor Deb during his Monday visit. "Gradually, other sports events will find their way back to Kanchenjungha."

This historic stadium, spread across seven acres and capable of hosting 27,000 spectators, holds immense significance for Silguri's sporting spirit. The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), responsible for its upkeep, is gearing up for a multi-crore renovation project. "The first phase will soon begin in certain portions of the gallery," revealed a source.

While 37 matches of the suspended football league remain, local sporting body Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad is optimistic about a swift resumption. "The civic body is working hard to restore the ground," stated general secretary Kuntal Goswami. "We aim to restart the league by the first week of January."

The Kanchenjungha Stadium's reopening signifies more than just the return of competitive sports. It is a testament to the resilience of Silguri's sporting spirit and its ability to rise above political discord. As cheers once again reverberate through the stadium, Silguri prepares to witness a renewed era of athletic glory on its hallowed grounds.
