Tragedy Strikes: Burdwan Railway Station Tank Collapse Claims Fourth Life

Following the early Sunday death of a 63-year-old victim of the Burdwan railway station tank disaster, the number of casualties has increased to four.

The 133-year-old metal water tank partly fell on them last Wednesday, injuring 34 people, including Sudhir Sutradhar of East Burdwan's Memari in the Hatpukur district. That day, three people had passed away.

When the tank collapsed, the 63-year-old marginal farmer—who had been to Burdwan for work—was waiting at the Burdwan station to board a train that would return him to Memari.

"Sutradhar had serious injuries to his waist, ribs, and scalp when he was hospitalized. He passed away from his wounds despite the best efforts of our medical staff, according to Tapas Ghosh, vice-principal and medical superintendent of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital.

On Sunday, Sutradhar's corpse was returned to his family.

"My dad was heading back home. He was at platform 2, waiting to get on a local train. My father died as a result of the water tank's abrupt collapse, Gopal Sutradhar, his grieving son, said on Sunday.

According to a medical official, at least a dozen other patients with numerous injuries from the tank fall at the station were receiving care.

"But right now, everyone's condition is stable," a Burdwan Medical College and Hospital representative said.

The railways have said that each victim wounded in the tragedy would get Rs 50,000 in compensation, while the next of kin of each deceased person will receive Rs 5 lakh.
