Cooch Behar Resident Arrested for Poisoning Seven Street Dogs

COOCH BEHAR, WEST BENGAL - A resident of Cooch Behar has been arrested for poisoning seven street dogs to death. The incident occurred on Friday, and the suspect has been identified as Satyen Barman, a resident of Kaljani village under the district's Pundibari police station.

According to police reports, Barman poisoned the dogs after one of his goats was bitten by a street dog. He reportedly mixed poison with food and fed it to the dogs.

The dead dogs were discovered by villagers on Friday morning, who then informed the police. Barman was subsequently arrested and charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and IPC Sections 428 and 429, which deal with the killing, poisoning, and maiming of animals.

"A post-mortem has been requested for the bodies," a police officer said. "We are awaiting the reports."

The incident has sparked outrage among animal rights activists. Ardhendu Banik, assistant secretary of HEAL, an animal welfare organization, condemned the killings.

Banik described the situation as "horrible.""The perpetrator needs to be punished severely to deter similar killings in the future."

Additionally, the authorities are looking into whether Barman had any collaborators or was working alone.
