The chairman of the Englishbazar municipality, which is administered by Trinamul, Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, has been accused by a Malda bakery owner of "illegally demolishing his property" in a police complaint.

In an effort to get their intervention, businessman Debasish Saha has also forwarded copies of the complaint to State Minister Firhad Hakim and the chief minister's office.

Former hotelier and current baker Saha said there is a legal dispute regarding who owns the property.

"The civic chairman's goons have threatened me in an attempt to seize the land. Recently, part of the property's back side was demolished by the civic body. Even though the matter is in court, I have received multiple phone calls and have been advised to meet with the civic chairman to resolve the ownership issue," Saha claimed.

According to Saha's family, they have owned the property—a two-story commercial building on a 2,880 square foot lot on Rabindra Avenue—for more than 50 years.

Choudhury said that Saha was using his ancestral property "illegally."

It is inherited land that we own. My ancestors had previously taken care of it. I'm responsible for taking care of the property after they pass away. There's a pending ownership case in court. However, a few individuals have banded together to discredit me," stated Choudhury, the civic leader who was formerly a state minister and MLA.

Official comments from the police were held back. Yet a top official stated that both accusations were being looked into.

BJP leaders in the district said that the police ought to be unbiased. Saha shouldn't be harassed, according to district BJP general secretary Amlan Bhaduri.
