According to reports, on Wednesday in the Keonjhar district of Odisha, a female elephant was killed when a cargo train ran over her while she was crossing the railway lines at the Bamebari railway section.

The elephant was in its mid-30s.

A freight train struck the female elephant in the rear of the herd, according to official reports, as the herd of six to seven elephants was crossing the tracks.

The mishap happened between five and six in the morning. According to authorities from the forest and railway, one possible explanation for the disaster might have been the fog's limited visibility. A combined task team has been established to keep an eye on the mishap.

Two elephants were killed in a similar incident that happened earlier in July. In May 2022, a moving train ran over three elephants at Bansapani in Keonjhar, causing another catastrophe.

Following the shocking occurrence, the state's railway ministry and forest department decided to collaborate to prevent future incidents of this kind. Based on available data, the state has recorded 784 elephant fatalities during a ten-year period, from 2012–13 to 2021–22. Figures from the state government show that 82 elephants perished in 2012–13, and that number continued to rise, reaching 86 in 2021–2022.
