IPL 2024: Players' Performances to Influence Indian T20 World Cup Squad Selection
Cup focus: Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh

The Indian Premier League (IPL), whether it be for the T20 World Cup or another high-profile series, is typically a major factor in selecting the Indian team before nearly all major tournaments.

This time, the decisions made by the selectors when choosing the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, which starts on June 4 and ends a week or two after the Indian Premier League ends in late May, will be directly influenced by the next edition of the most competitive T20 league in the world.

That will give the players a lot of motivation to go above and beyond in the upcoming Indian Premier League, which begins on Friday.

By now, someone had to have put together a basic roster of the cricket players competing in the Twenty20 Cup. Yashasvi Jaiswal of the Rajasthan Royals, who has been in incredible form since the last IPL, Shubman Gill of the Gujarat Titans, Rinku Singh, the master finisher for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Ruturaj Gaikwad of the Chennai Super Kings, and his teammate, medium-pacer all-rounder Shivam Dube, should all be on the list that is anticipated to be announced at the end of the IPL.

In particular, Dube's run of strong performances for the Chennai Super Kings will not only guarantee his spot in the Cup team but also put more pressure on senior teammate and Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya, who is expected to make a major comeback after missing five months of action due to an ankle injury.

Pandya has an edge because most BCCI heavyweights see him as India's T20I captain in the future and as Rohit Sharma's deputy at this year's T20 World Cup. He will therefore most likely be included in the Cup team unless he has another injury. Nevertheless, if Dube continues to deliver, he will face some pressure.

Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah are almost certain to make the quicks. As a result, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, and Avesh Khan will primarily compete. The three need to make an impression on the selectors and the administration of Team India, so expect them to conduct themselves with great zeal. Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is eager to build on his performance in the recently ended England Tests, will also draw a good deal of attention.

Along with left-arm spinner Axar Patel and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep appears to be an obvious pick for the T20 Cup team given his recent performance in both red-ball and white-ball cricket. Leg-spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal might compete fiercely, while youthful Suyash Sharma, who made an impression last year, is an underdog who should be noted down by the selectors if he performs well for the Knight Riders once more.

Chief selector Ajit Aggarkar and his associates will also be monitoring Washington Sundar, the spinner-all-round player for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He too can be in the running if he performs well in the IPL.

Ishan Kishan, the keeper-batter, and Shreyas Iyer will also be highlighted. This IPL will be KKR captain Iyer and Mumbai Indians player Kishan's chance, out of BCCI's annual contracts, to deliver performances of note and send a message to those who matter in Indian cricket.

Speaking of seniors, Suryakumar Yadav, who hasn't played since December due to an ankle injury and subsequent groin surgery, will want to get back into the swing of things as soon as possible. Prior to the World Cup, India's captain Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid would like him to be at his peak.

Virat predicament

India has recently triumphed in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) despite without the services of captain Virat Kohli. However, he is still Virat Kohli. Even if Kohli is in outstanding form in IPL, would the team management and selectors dare to overlook the fact that he has been absent from cricket recently due to the birth of his second child?

The influence that Kohli's presence and ability to lead the squad can have is immense. And in big tournaments, he does improve. That is something that simply cannot be disregarded.
