Amit Sharma, the filmmaker, said on Monday that his sports biography Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn, had become the first Hindi film to be shown at a theater in Uruguay.

The 44-year-old filmmaker captioned a photo of moviegoers posing in front of the film's poster inside a Uruguayan theater, saying, "#Maidaan creates history by being the first Hindi movie to be released in Uruguay."

Sharma also posted a close-up of a Maidaan poster and an image from the movie's theater showing.

The main character in Maidaan is Devgn's portrayal of football coach Syed Abdul Rahim, who vows to accomplish the nearly unachievable task of fielding an underdog football squad for the Asian Games. It follows the journey of the football coach who, in the 1950s, assembled players from all over India to form a world-class squad capable of competing on the international scene.

Raising the Indian national team to unprecedented heights in the 1950s, Rahim—dubbed "the architect of modern Indian football"—saw the team win multiple titles, including gold in the 1951 and 1962 Asian Games.

Written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah, Maidaan also stars Jawan actress Priyamani. This year's Eid saw the global premiere of the film, which has lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla and music composed by A.R. Rahman.
