Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, visited the Garden Reach neighborhood of the city on Monday. There, an under-construction building collapsed, killing two people and injuring at least seven others.

She gave Vineet Goyal, the commissioner of Calcutta Police, instructions to take legal action against individuals responsible for the illegal construction of the five-story structure in the area, which fell around midnight, according to PTI.


Banerjee also paid a visit to the hospital where the injured individuals are receiving care.

This place is really crowded. This construction was unlawful and operated without official authorization. After assessing the issue, she informed reporters, "I have instructed the CP and the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) to take action."

Banerjee came to visit, her forehead bandaged. On Thursday night, she got cut on her forehead and had stitches put in.

The chief minister declared that the families whose shantytowns were harmed in the building collapse have the support of her government.

She added that five or six individuals might still be trapped beneath the rubble and that two people had died in the building fall.

"This incidence occurred during Ramadan this month. "I send my condolences to the families of the deceased," she continued.

The site of the rescue operation is on Azan Molla Lane in the western part of the city.

"At midnight, a five-story building that was still under construction collapsed in a horrifying catastrophe. At least seven people were hurt and two people died, according to local mayor Firhad Hakim.

Hakim surmised that there might be a few more victims buried beneath the rubble.

He declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 1 lakh to injured individuals and Rs. 5 lakh to each deceased person's next of kin.

The urban development minister for West Bengal, Hakim, declared, "I have spoken to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and we will give Rs five lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person and Rs one lakh to each injured person." Vineet Goyal, the commissioner of Calcutta Police, visited the scene and assessed the effectiveness of the rescue effort.

Late on Sunday night, the structure that was still under construction fell in the Garden Reach area. A few folks have been saved by us. The police official stated, "The recusal operation is still ongoing.

Locals were the first to arrive at the scene and reported that before the structure collapsed, pieces of concrete had fallen out.

The structure fell with a loud noise and a dense cloud of dust covering the neighborhood. They claimed that the heavily inhabited area's shanties were struck by the falling debris.

"The under-construction structure crashed on the nearby shanties, despite the fact that no one lived there. We are concerned that a large number of people may still be buried beneath the debris," a local person stated.

West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X, saying, "I urge @chief_west, Secretary @HomeBengal, @CPKolkata to immediately involve West Bengal State Disaster Management Team for immediate Rescue & Relief."

"I'm getting panicked calls about possible victims. Kindly send out any team—fire fighters, police, or any other team—that can assist in saving the victims," he pleaded.
