Maxwell's Record-breaking Century Powers Australia to Victory Over West Indies
Glenn Maxwell opens up for a big shot in Adelaide on Sunday.

Australia defeated the West Indies by 34 runs on Sunday, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in their three-match Twenty20 International series thanks to a century from Glenn Maxwell that broke all previous records.

With eight sixes and twelve fours in his undefeated 120 off 55 balls, Maxwell combined with Tim David for a 92-run partnership (31 off 14 balls) to lead Australia to 241/4, the greatest T20I total at Adelaide Oval. "Having (Maxwell) in our team is a huge blessing," Australia's captain Mitch Marsh said. "People come to watch him because he's a game-changer and match-winner."

Maxwell's century, which came off 50 balls, overtook South African Rilee Rossouw's 52-ball performance against Bangladesh at the 2022 World Cup to become the quickest century in a Twenty20 international in Australia. In addition, Maxwell's sixth T20I century tied the record set by Rohit Sharma of India.

Five wickets fell in the opening seven overs, derailing the West Indies chase, but skipper Rovman Powell (63 off 36 balls) and Andre Russell (37 off 16 balls) staged a resurgence that offered the visitors a fleeting chance to reach the enormous total.

However, Marcus Stoinis (3/36) and rookie Spencer Johnson (2/39) led Australia's bowlers in reducing the West Indies chase to 207/9 in its 20 overs, proving that the weight of the chase was ultimately too much.

Quick scores: Glenn Maxwell 120 n.o., Jason Holder 2/42, Australia 241/4 in 20 ovs. West Indies 207/9 in 20 overs (Matt Stoinis 3/36, Rovman Powell 63, Andre Russell 37). Australia prevailed by a score of 34 runs.
