MCC dismisses one member and suspends two others for abusing Australia players

Following the contentious stumping of Jonny Bairstow in the second Ashes Test, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) dismissed one member and suspended two others for verbally abusing Australia players in the Lord's lounge.

When England batsman Jonny Bairstow left the crease after believing the ball was dead, wicketkeeper Alex Carey was able to stump him, ending the Test and giving Australia a 2-0 series lead.

Several MCC members were spotted jeering and heckling the players as they made their way to the dressing room during a break before stewards intervened to diffuse the situation.

Due to the tense environment in the pavilion, Guy Lavender, the chief executive of MCC, had to address the members at the intermission.

A accusation of "abusive, offensive or inappropriate behavior or language" was brought against all three MCC members. A member was expelled, another was suspended for four and a half years, and a third was given a 30-month ban.

The MCC issued a statement saying, "The actions of the three individuals in the Pavilion on the relevant day fell well below the behavior expected from our members." "The consequences of violating the Club's Code of Conduct are as set forth above."

As holders Australia kept the Ashes, England eventually won the third and fifth Tests to level the series 2-2.
