Monsoon Arrival in Malda: Calcutta Welcomes Rain Relief

On Thursday, the monsoon made landfall in Malda, and Calcutta experienced rain, which helped to relieve the city's oppressive heat and humidity for a while. Met officials have stated that rain is expected in Calcutta during the next three days.

The Met prediction states that the monsoon winds should reach in south Bengal between Friday and Sunday.

In Kolkata, the rain on Thursday was not very extensive. It appeared in multiple spells. There were severe wind gusts in several areas prior to the first spell, which occurred in the afternoon.

However, since June 6, it was the first time that the city has received genuine showers.

Esplanade was dry around 1:40 pm on Thursday, when rain was falling in Behala. But eventually the whole city was shrouded in clouds. Rain fell in most places by the evening.

The city experienced the intended cooling impact as the cloud cover persisted.

It was a nice late afternoon and evening.

The showers were caused by a cyclonic circulation over east Bihar and its surrounding areas, a Met official stated.

On June 20, 2024, a Met report stated, "The southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of north Bengal and it covered North and South Dinajpur districts and most parts of Malda district."

"Over the next two to three days, conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon to continue advancing into certain areas of South Bengal and the remaining parts of North Bengal."

According to a Met official, a district is considered to have experienced the monsoon when more than 50% of its Met stations record rain and there is a shift in the wind pattern.

"Dry winds from the country blow into south Bengal in the winter. We receive moist winds from the Bay during the monsoon. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Calcutta's head of the weather section, H.R. Biswas, stated that although the change has started, it will take some time for it to become widely felt.

This year, the monsoon arrived early in north Bengal. However, it hasn't arrived yet in south Bengal, where it usually does on June 10.

But Biswas had one optimistic thing to say. Rain is expected, even if the monsoon does not reach Calcutta on Friday. It's expected to rain in Calcutta on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday," he stated.

The high and low points were recorded at 35.8 and 28.2 degrees, respectively. Up until 8:30 p.m., Alipore saw about 3 mm of rain, according to the Met office.
