Premier League Drama: Liverpool’s Title Hopes Fade as Manchester United and Newcastle United Face Off

Liverpool, England - Liverpool’s slim Premier League title hopes faded further on Saturday when Michail Antonio’s late header earned West Ham United a deserved point with a 2-2 draw. This result comes on the heels of Liverpool’s 2-0 loss at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday.

In a flat first half, Liverpool were marginally the better side. However, they conceded first when Jarrod Bowen nodded home shortly before halftime, marking his 20th goal of the season in his 200th game for the Hammers.

Liverpool levelled three minutes after the restart through Andy Robertson. They then took the lead in the 65th minute through an own goal, with Cody Gakpo’s sliced effort bouncing off Angelo Ogbonna before Tomas Soucek’s attempted clearance hit goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and crossed the line.

However, Antonio dragged the hosts back on terms when he met Bowen’s cross with a powerful header in the 77th minute. This came shortly before Juergen Klopp introduced Mohamed Salah in a triple substitution, which was preceded by a heated exchange with his manager.

Liverpool, who remain third on 75 points, have now taken just five points from their last five league games as their title challenge has petered out. They trail second-placed Manchester City by one point and first-placed Arsenal by two points, both of whom have games in hand.

Meanwhile, Manchester United could only muster a point against Burnley after substitute Zeki Amdouni scored a late penalty to rescue a 1-1 draw for the relegation-threatened side. The penalty, awarded after goalkeeper Andre Onana fouled Amdouni in the box, cancelled a late strike by Antony.

In other news, Alexander Isak netted twice while Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson were also on target as Newcastle United thrashed Sheffield United 5-1 at St James’ Park to confirm the visitors’ relegation. Sheffield remain on 16 points from 35 matches and cannot finish outside the bottom three.

This weekend of football drama has left fans on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the next round of matches.
