Spain defeated the reigning champion Italy 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the round of 16 at Euro 2024.

The first meeting between two international heavyweights at this European Championship ended with Spain winning thanks to an own goal by Italy's Riccardo Calafiori in the 55th minute.

Three-time champion At the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Spain utterly dominated the Group B match. The 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal further cemented his status as one of soccer's most exciting rising talents with an incredible display.

Prior to unintentionally shoving the ball into Calafiori's legs, Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a series of excellent saves to keep the score low. However, Donnarumma was unable to stop the ball from ricocheting into his own goal.

In Group C, England and Denmark drew 1-1 after Harry Kane scored the first goal and then made an error that allowed the Danes to equalize. In Frankfurt, Kane gave his team a lead thanks to a record-breaking 64th goal. But Morten Hjulmand equalized from long range after his careless pass.

Luka Jovic scored in stoppage time of the other Group C match to give Serbia a 1-1 draw with Slovenia.

With four points in the lead, England is probably going to make it to the round of 16.
