Supreme Court Delays NBW Against Randeep Singh Surjewala by Five Weeks

The non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala in a 23-year-old case involving an alleged arson incident and the obstruction of public officials from doing their jobs was delayed by the Supreme Court on Thursday for a period of five weeks.

Surjewala was instructed by a bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud to petition the trial court for the revocation of the bail within four weeks.

The case concerns an alleged event in 2000 at a protest march in front of the district commissioner's office in Varanasi that included violence, burning, and damage of public property by Congress supporters, including Surjewala.

We allow the petitioner to file a request for bail cancellation with the trial court within a four-week period. A five-week time will elapse before the warrant issued by the... is executed, the bench, which also included Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, ordered.

Attorney Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Surjewala, requested an urgent mention, and the court granted his motion.
