A tragic train collision in West Bengal results in fatalities.

According to police reports obtained by PTI, the Kanchanjunga Express, which was heading towards Sealdah, collided with a goods train on Monday near the Rangapani station in West Bengal, resulting in a tragic event that resulted in at least five fatalities and possibly thirty injuries.


Following the tragedy, which occurred approximately seven kilometers from the New Jalpaiguri station in North Bengal, rescue attempts were immediately initiated. The injured passengers are currently being transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention. According to a senior police officer, five individuals have died, but the wounded are not considered life-threatening.


The impact of the collision was so severe that it caused three rear compartments of the Kanchanjunga Express to derail as it was struck from behind by the locomotive of the goods train. The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway’s Katihar division reported that the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was en route from Agartala to Sealdah when the tragedy struck.


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock and sorrow over the incident in a post on social media platform X. She stated that she had just learned about the tragic accident in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district.
It has been claimed that a cargo train collided with the Kanchenjunga Express, but more information is still pending.

In order to expedite rescue and recovery efforts and offer required medical support, Banerjee guaranteed that district authorities, police officers, medical teams, ambulances, and disaster response units had been dispatched to the accident scene.
She stressed that in order to handle this emergency situation, war-like measures have been started.

According to railway officials, the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was heading from Agartala to Sealdah when it encountered an accident at approximately nine in the morning.
