After a thrilling Round-of-16 match that finished 2-2 on aggregate on Wednesday, Atletico Madrid needed a penalty shootout to defeat Inter Milan and advance to the Champions League quarterfinals.

After Inter, who won the first leg 1-0 at home, took the lead at the Metropolitano, Atletico appeared to be losing, but they rallied and managed to force a penalty shootout.

Jan Oblak of Atletico made saves against Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, while Yann Sommer of Inter stopped Saul Niguez's attempt. Lautaro Martinez was left to save their hopes.

After the game ended 2-1 in favor of the Spanish team in extra time, the Argentine striker blasted his penalty over the crossbar to put Atletico through 3-2 in the shootout.

"I usually say that, in a penalty shootout, luck plays a part. Since you have to choose the correct side," Oblak stated to Movistar+. "You need to save the ball, and if the guy strikes it properly, I don't think it can be saved.

"I'm glad I was able to save them today, but the main thing is that we won and advanced to the quarterfinals."

Federico Dimarco gave Inter the lead in the 33rd minute, but Atletico responded two minutes later through Antoine Griezmann, and Memphis Depay's late goal forced extra time.

Both sides had opportunities to win in extra time, but Diego Simeone's club held strong, and the losing team from the previous season was eliminated from the tournament.

However, Inter was the first to score. The ball was retrieved by Nicolo Barella in the vicinity, who then brought it back to Dimarco, who was waiting and hit a shot that went straight down the middle and past Oblak.

Atletico, already behind 2-0 overall, retaliated right away. Two Inter players absolutely missed a pass that Koke lifted into the box, and Griezmann turned and made no mistakes up close.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi said to Amazon Prime, "We should have been more careful once we found the lead tonight (Wednesday), instead we put Atletico and their fans back in the game."

"Work hard" paid off.

Borussia Dortmund defeated PSV Eindhoven 2-0 under pressure, and with a 3-1 aggregate victory, they qualified for the Champions League last eight for the first time in three years. Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus scored goals in the match.

In the third minute, Sancho, who is on loan from Manchester United, guided a shot through the legs of an Eindhoven player and in off the post. Reus then finished calmly in second-half stoppage time to seal the victory.

Sancho, who was dropped by coach Erik ten Hag at United and returned to Dortmund on loan in January, scored his second goal in as many games.

Edin Terzic, the coach of Dortmund, stated, "I think we really earned our quarter-final spot with hard work." "We started the season with what may have been our best thirty minutes of soccer.

"We ought to have scored more goals in that crucial period."
