'Suicide Squad Isekai' Trailer Reveals DC's New Anime Adventure
Amanda Waller Sends Harley Quinn and Co. on a Peacekeeping Mission to Another World
In the teaser for DC, Warner Bros. Japan, and WIT Studio's Suicide Squad Isekai anime, head of A.R.G.U.S. Amanda Waller sends supervillain Harley Quinn and other Suicide Squad members—Deadshot, Peacemaker, Clayface, and King Shark—on a peacekeeping mission to a world full of bloodthirsty creatures.
The one-minute, forty-four-second film, which was released by DC on Thursday, opens with the "Clown prince of crime" of Gotham City, Joker, and his neurotic anti-heroine girlfriend, Harley Quinn, escaping in a car after Joker sets off an explosion in a towering building. As he holds Quinn on the edge of a building, the gloomy Joker remarks, "The world we know is so hideous, and above all, unfair." The next scene shows Amanda Waller giving Quinn, one of the five supervillains who would be transferred to another world (Isekai), a particular task.
Isekai is the name given to a subgenre of Japanese fiction in which the main characters are taken from the real world to a fantastical or parallel dimension, often in anime and manga.
The teaser teases that the aim is to restore peace to a broken world where a kingdom and an empire have been at war for many years. The royal family in the Isekai universe is still dubious since it is difficult to trust supervillains. Before they take any action against the adversaries, Suicide Squad leader Rick Flag advises them to make friends with the royal family.
The teaser closes with fast-paced action scenes featuring Quinn and other Suicide Squad members battling monsters while the popular YouTuber Mori Calliope's series Go-Getter plays in the background.
Quinn's voice actor in the anime is Anna Nagase, best known for portraying Riko Amanai in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 (2023). Joker, portrayed by Yuichiro Umehara, who previously provided the voice of the lead character in the anime Goblin Slayer (2018), will be joining her.
The authors of the narrative are Tappei Nagatsuki and Eiji Umehara, the creators of the sci-fi anime Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song from 2021. It was made by the renowned Japanese animation studio WIT Studio, which is best known for creating Ranking of Kings (2022), Spy x Family (2022), and Attack on Titan (2013–19).
Tomoyasu Hotei, best known for his song Battle Without Honor or Humanity, which was utilized in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 feature film Kill Bill, performs the anime's opening theme, Another World.
The anime Suicide Squad Isekai is expected to debut this year.
