Supporters gather to welcome Mamata Banerjee in Kurseong on Wednesday.

On December 12, when chief minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit the city and participate in a public service distribution program at the Kanchenjungha Stadium here, the BJP has scheduled a protest in Siliguri.

The head of the opposition in the assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, will participate in the protest on December 12 in Siliguri. The event will be attended by all of our MLAs from all over north Bengal as well as other party representatives in the area, stated Manoj Tigga, the chief whip of the party in the Assembly and an MLA from Madarihat in Alipurduar.

The chief minister began a seven-day visit here on Wednesday. She initially made her way to the hills and spent the next few days attending government events in Kurseong, Alipurduar, and Banarhat, Jalpaiguri.

According to party sources, the BJP legislators and leaders will stage a protest to voice their disapproval of the Trinamul government's supposed indifference towards north Bengal.

Shankar Ghosh, the Siliguri BJP MLA, has been protesting since Mamata's visit was revealed because her event was scheduled to take place at Kanchenjungha Stadium, the biggest sports complex in the area.

"North Bengal has been deprived by the state government for many years. It did nothing to upgrade the sports facilities in the area, and now it is preparing to cause damage to a well-known football field in Siliguri by holding the chief minister's program there. During the demonstration, we will voice our opposition to these issues," Ghosh said on the phone on Wednesday from Calcutta.

The chief minister's program forced Siliguri Mahakuma Krira Parishad, the sub-divisional sports body, to suspend the current super-division football league. League matches had been suspended since December 4 due to construction of the dais, enclosures, and other facilities for the government event. The league began play on November 26 at the stadium.

However, the saffron brigade's leaders kept the location of their demonstration a secret. Party leader: "It will be announced in due course."

However, when informed about the BJP's intention to hold a public protest on the day the chief minister would be in the city, district Trinamul leaders seemed unfazed.

They are attempting to incite tension and have become politically bankrupt. Such strategies are ineffective. People support us, and we'll politically block any attempt to sabotage the peace," stated Vedabrata Dutta, the district spokesperson for Trinamul's Darjeeling (plains) area.
