BJP's Nomination Drama: Relief in Jalpaiguri, Changes in Raiganj
Jalpaiguri BJP MP Jayanta Roy

The BJP central leadership's release of the second list of Lok Sabha nominees on Sunday night relieved party workers in Jalpaiguri, where sitting MP Jayanta Roy, a physician, was put forward for a second term.

On April 19, Jalpaiguri would host the opening round of the seven-phase general election.

Roy arrived just in time, since he had just two days, on March 26 and 27, following Holi, to submit his nomination paperwork.

We feel a great deal of relief by his nomination. The candidate has finally been announced by the party. Given that we had won the seat in 2019, many of us were concerned about the delay, a top BJP official stated.

Since Sunday night, we have begun the preparatory work. Every party employee is fully engaged in campaigning. The leader continued, "There is not barely a month left before the elections.

Nirmal Chandra Roy has been fielded by Trinamul from the Jalpaiguri seat. Roy was the past year's Dhupguri bypoll winner.

Young CPM leader Debraj Barman is also involved in the conflict.

Modification for Debasree

Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and workers in Raiganj, where the second round of polls is scheduled for April 26, will endorse Kartik Pal, a former civic chairman and Trinamul turncoat. Pal took Debasree Chaudhuri's place as the current MP.

The BJP high command has selected Kolkata South for Debasree.

The BJP has replaced two candidates and existing Members of Parliament, John Barla in Alipurduar and Debasree in Raiganj, in north Bengal, where the party had won seven of the eight LS seats.

The Raiganj MP, however, has done better and has been sent to run from a different constituency, in contrast to Barla who was dumped.

There was some dissatisfaction among the BJP's rank and file in North Dinajpur, as some questioned the MP (Debasree)'s visibility. Furthermore, some dissidents wanted the party nominee to be a native-born person. A political observer stated, "It appears the BJP central leadership recognized the circumstances and selected a local candidate.

BJP insiders claimed that Debasree had insisted on Raiganj.

She did, however, receive a clear missive informing her that running from Kolkata South was her only choice. She had to eventually get in line, according to a party official.
