Ganderbal, Kashmir - Ghulam Nabi Wani, a 74-year-old resident of Wayil, Ganderbal in the Kashmir Valley, has lived a life that is a testament to contentment and simplicity.
A Life on the Road
Wani, who has been a transporter for most of his life, now makes occasional taxi sorties for tourists more as a hobby than as an occupation. He fondly recalls his days as a truck driver, traveling across the country, and takes pride in the durable friendships he has struck in many places beyond Kashmir.
Family and Livelihood
Living with a large joint family who own small retail businesses and orchards around their village, Wani’s life is filled with love and companionship. Despite earning less compared to 2019, he has few complaints. “I make enough to keep me going in a relaxed fashion,” he says.
Savings and Expenditure
With age, Wani’s earnings and savings have decreased. However, he remains unbothered. “At my age, what money I make and what possessions I have, I want to enjoy with my wife and family,” he shares.
Government Schemes and Corruption
When asked about the impact of central or state government schemes on his life, Wani maintains that he is a self-made person. “I live off what I have, and I am happy,” he states.
While he has little to do with government or public affairs now, he acknowledges the existence of corruption. “They want money for every little thing, they steal money in contracts. This I know of from what I hear, but it is nothing new or strange,” he remarks.
Education and the Next Generation
Wani has ensured a good education for all three of his sons. “I educated all three of my sons, through school and then to give them additional skills. They are all well-employed, have their own families, and they are capable of running their affairs. We all live together, which is a blessing,” he says with pride.
As Srinagar voted on May 13, Wani’s story serves as a reminder of the simple joys of life and the importance of contentment.
