JMM Seeks Meeting with President to Discuss Key Issues Ahead of General Election
Representation to Highlight Sarna Code, Reservation, and Local Policy of Jharkhand
In order to offer President Droupadi Murmu with a representation regarding "some important issues" that the party want to address prior to the general election, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has requested a meeting.
A 50-member delegation made up of JMM MPs, ministers, MLAs from Jharkhand, and top party office bearers was "keen to meet" the President in order to submit the representation, according to a letter from JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey to the President's secretary.
Notable concerns included in the March 4 letter, which was leaked to the public on Thursday, were the "Sarna code, SC/ST and OBC reservation, and 1932 local policy of Jharkhand."
The Hemant Soren government had previously explored similar topics but was unable to introduce them due to various obstacles.
The state administration subsequently demanded that the Sarna code be included to the census form's religious column, which includes space for adherents of the following six faiths: Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, Christian, Muslim, and Hindu.
In September of last year, Hemant wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleading with him to implement the Sarna law, even as the tribal people staged protests demanding its introduction.
A bill to raise the overall reservation quota for SC, ST, and OBCs to 77% was also passed by the Hemant government. Additionally, it approved the statute that established the khatian, or land records, of 1932 as the foundation for identifying the state's population. However, the previous governor sent back both proposals last year with suggestions for changes.
