Kolkata Metro Railway stated in a statement on Saturday that work on the subterranean Mominpur-Esplanade section of the Joka-Esplanade Metro Corridor (Purple Line) has begun.
The 6.5 km section from Joka to Taratala, which is part of the 15.08 km Joka-Esplanade corridor in south Kolkata, was opened on December 30, 2022, and it was later extended to Majerhat on March 6, 2024.
Starting from Khidderpore, the tunneling procedure will extend to Victoria (Memorial) station. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) operations will commence from St. Thomas School grounds.
According to an official, three club tents in the Maidan area—the Rajasthan Club, the Calcutta Police Club, and the Calcutta Kennel Club—will also need to be temporarily moved outside the construction zone in order to make room for the Park Street station.
The Manohardas Tarag waterbody will be dewatered to make room for the building of tunnels beneath it, and the Kolkata Mounted Police paddock will be temporarily moved to Saheed Minar Maidan in order to make space for the construction of the Esplanade Metro station.
