Rachin Ravindra Revives New Zealand's Hopes with Half-century
Wellington: On Saturday, the third day of the first Test, Australia was bowled out for 164 by New Zealand in their second innings, thanks to a 5-45 effort by part-time off-spinner Glenn Phillips.
The wickets of Usman Khawaja (28), Cameron Green (34), Mitch Marsh (first ball duck), Travis Head (29), and Alex Carey (3) made up Phillips' first five-wicket haul.
In less than four hours, Australia was bowled out with Matt Henry taking 3/36.
Australia led by 204 runs in the first innings, yet they still extended their advantage to 368 overall. By the time of stumps, New Zealand was 257 runs down at 111/3.
Before stumps, Rachin Ravindra scored a half-century off 77 balls, and at the end of play, he was 56 not out while Daryl Mitchell was on 12.
When Australia removed Kane Williamson for nine in the last session, they dealt a serious blow. Nathan Lyon, the off-spinner who perhaps has the key to the game, dismissed Williamson.
Following his 0 for 1 rundown in the first inning, Williamson was caught at leg slip by Steve Smith off a ball that bounced higher than he had anticipated. As New Zealand's prospects of victory started to fade, Smith caught Will Young (15) off Head at first slip.
Just before stumps, Ravindra gave those aspirations a boost with his first-ever half-century against Australia. In his Test career, he made 240 the only other occasion he exceeded 50.
For the most of Sunday, the fourth day, rain is predicted.
