Samson Shines, Royals Trump Lucknow in Captains' Clash
Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson during his unbeaten innings of 82 off 52 balls against Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur on Sunday.

An unofficial test between two keeper-batters vying for a spot in India's T20 World Cup squad was planned for the evening. Both, who are also captains of their respective IPL teams, eventually passed the exam, though not with the same outcome.

KL Rahul, making his comeback after a protracted injury layoff, started cautiously before releasing his arms for his 58 off 44 balls, while Sanju Samson was all show with his 82 not out off 52 balls. As the Rajasthan Royals defeated KL's Lucknow Super Giants by 20 runs on Sunday in Jaipur to start their IPL 2024 campaign, Samson was also the team's happiest captain.

Samson lost two wickets in the Powerplay, but he still managed to advance his team's score with six sixes and three fours. He and Riyan Parag (43 off 29 balls) shared a 93-run partnership that anchored Rajasthan's innings as they set up a formidable 193/4 in 20 overs.

During the Powerplay, Lucknow lost three wickets in the first over. At one point, they were down 11/3, but they rallied because to some excellent shots from Rahul and Nicholas Pooran (64 not out from 41 balls). However, they eventually ran out of gas and finished with a 173/6 lead.

Rahul did not want to place too much emphasis on his team's loss in the Powerplay overs because he did not believe the target was too large to pursue.

Since this is only the first game, I won't overanalyze or make too much of it. Every team needs a strong powerplay, and none of them have mastered it yet, according to the Lucknow captain, who made this statement following the game.

Rahul made a statement about his current condition after suffering a quadriceps injury that kept him out of elite action for a while by taking wickets for his team.

Using the new two bouncers per over regulation in the IPL, Rajasthan's left-arm pace combo of Trent Boult (2/35) and IPL rookie Nandre Burger (1/30) made life difficult for the Lucknow top-order batters.

Despite the early loss, Lucknow rallied thanks to Rahul and Pooran's collaboration, which gave them newfound optimism. They had two set hitters at the crease and needed 49 runs from the final four overs.

Yet, Rajasthani seamer Sandeep Sharma, an expert in death overs, threw a wrench in Lucknow's plans when he removed Rahul off the opening ball of the 17th over.

Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin, the spin combo from Rajasthan, both claimed a wicket.
