Sikkim Gears Up for Assembly and Lok Sabha Elections on April 19

The first of the seven stages of the general elections in 2024 will take place on April 19, with elections to the Lok Sabha and Sikkim Assembly scheduled.

Jacob Khaling, the political secretary of Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), stated that "the president of Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and also the chief minister of Sikkim is fully prepared to form the next government through the election process."

In the 2019 Assembly election, Golay succeeded in unseating Sikkim De Democratic Front (SDF) president Pawan Kumar Chamling. From 1994 to 2019, Chamling served as the chief minister of Sikkim.

Many people think that the Golay and Chamling parties will compete for the 32 Assembly seats and the lone Lok Sabha seat in Sikkim.

However, a lot of people think that the recently established Citizen Action Party (CAP) might be the oppositional force in the next election.

A political observer stated, "CAP's performance would impact the end result in some Assembly constituencies in Sikkim."

On Saturday, Chamling encouraged the people of Sikkim to cast their ballots on April 19.

According to Chamling, "if citizens do not responsibly use their right to vote, not only will the electoral process be meaningless, but putting the future of the state in the hands of the wrong government will bring further destruction and disorder."

The latest Rajya Sabha election was won by D.T. Lepcha of the BJP, mostly because to Golay's SKM backing.
