Tragedy Strikes Newtown Girls High School: Crowd Assaults School Premises Following the Death of Class VI Student

Tuesday saw an assault by a crowd on a well-known girls' school in this area after the death of a Class VI student who became ill in her classroom and was taken to the hospital.

Anushka Debnath, 11, a Class VI student at the 2,400-student Newtown Girls High School in Alipurduar town, reportedly complained of uneasiness and began vomiting around 12:40 p.m., according to sources.

Anushka was hurried to the district hospital by teachers. After checking her out, the emergency ward doctors recommended that she be admitted. The youngster passed away on route to the female ward.

One of the teachers who was with Anushka remarked, "We couldn't believe she was no more."

According to sources, as word of Anushka's passing spread, a number of pupils started crying, some guardians showed there, and the administration decided to call a halt to courses and urge the children to leave.

About 400 individuals, including guardians, gathered in front of the school at 2:00 pm after the pupils had departed, and they started abusing the instructors. Before long, some people attempted to break through the main gate while others flung stones at the structure.

The assailants claimed Anushka died because "teachers delayed in taking the ill girl to the hospital" while the mayhem went on for an hour.

Teachers hiding in classrooms out of fear. A police squad arrived at the scene around 3:15 p.m. and dispersed the protestors.

President of the school governing committee and Trinamul politician Mridul Goswami said that the instructors who "immediately took her to the hospital" did not act carelessly.

Anushka got pneumonia a few years ago, according to her father Rajib Debnath, a pharmacist. The reason of her unexpected death has not yet been disclosed by the doctors.
