VAR officials replaced after Liverpool wrongly had goal disallowed

Following Liverpool's erroneous goal being incorrectly disallowed in their 2-1 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook have been changed for two games this matchweek.

The organization that oversees referees, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), eventually acknowledged that it was the erroneous call to rule against Diaz's effort, attributing the error to human error, and that the goal "should have been awarded through VAR intervention."

The PGMOL said on Sunday that England and Cook would be replaced for the games between Fulham and Chelsea and Nottingham Forest vs. Brentford, respectively. At the City Ground, Craig Pawson will now represent England as the fourth official, and Eddie Smart will succeed Cook as the assistant referee at Craven Cottage.

After the game, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp expressed his frustration with the VAR referees, claiming that they drew their offside lines incorrectly. Despite the loss, he added that he was nevertheless proud of his team's heroic effort.

After the game, Virgil van Dijk added his voice, adding that the VAR should be "absolutely clear and obvious."

The use of VAR in football has once again come under scrutiny in light of this event. It is crucial to remember that VAR is still a relatively young technology, therefore mistakes are bound to occur. To reduce the amount of human error, it is crucial to make sure that VAR is utilized as effectively as possible.
