The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences revealed the much-awaited 96th Academy Awards nominees on Tuesday, highlighting a wide range of motion pictures and theatrical productions that have captured the attention of viewers in recent years. Oppenheimer is in the front of the race with an astounding 13 nominations, which include Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), and Best Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt). Killers of the Flower Moon (ten nominations) and Poor Things (eleven nominations) are not far behind.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig disregarded

Nevertheless, despite the festivities, industry watchers noticed a few noteworthy omissions. Greta Gerwig was inexplicably left out of the running for a Best Director nomination, despite her incredible achievement of becoming the first woman to helm three straight Best Picture contenders, including Barbie. Barbie's main actress Margot Robbie was not nominated for Best Actress but did get a nomination for Best Picture in her capacity as a producer.

Leonardo DiCaprio is not included.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who played World War I veteran Ernest Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon, received ten nods for the film, including Best Picture and Best Director. However, he was conspicuously missing from the Best Actor category. However, the movie serves as a tribute to Martin Scorsese, who now owns the record for the most nominations for an Oscar as a filmmaker. In addition to receiving a lot of praise and nominations, Killers of the Flower Moon was notably overlooked for the Best Adapted Screenplay award.

Greta Lee was passed over

Greta Lee, who won several awards for her role in the film Past Lives and was seen as a serious Oscar candidate, was disappointed to see herself excluded from the Best Actress category. Though she was initially optimistic, her outstanding performance was eventually disregarded by the Academy and industry honors.

May December disregarded

Remarkably missing from key categories was Todd Haynes' May December, which garnered praise for Charles Melton's depiction of Joe Yoo. Fans and reviewers were perplexed when lead actors Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman, along with director Todd Haynes, were left out of the picture. There was only one nomination for the drama's Best Original Screenplay.

Nominated for Best Supporting Actress is America Ferrera.

America Ferrera, who played Barbie's human counterpart in the movie, was unexpectedly nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Prior to the Oscars, Ferrera had only had a nomination from the Critics Choice Awards 2024. She is one of three persons of color nominated in the supporting actress category, along with Da'Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers and Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple.

Symbolizing a first

In addition to creating history, Lily Gladstone was the first Native American to get a Best Actress nomination for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. By becoming the first Asian woman to be nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Celine Song achieved yet another landmark.

The Anatomy of a Fall creates a stir.

At the 96th Academy Awards, Anatomy of a Fall, the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, is competing in five categories. The French courtroom drama has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. In addition, the film's principal actress Sandra Hüller—who also features in The Zone of Interest, another Best Picture nominee—has been nominated for Best Actress. Along with these honors, Justine Triet, the film's co-writer and director, is nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director, while the picture itself is up for Best Editing.
