Couple in Police Custody Over Alleged Murder of Three-Month-Old Daughter
Accused Previously Attempted to Sell Older Daughters, Say Police Sources
For five days, Rintu Sheikh, 29, and his wife Belura Khatun, 25, are being held in police custody by the chief judicial magistrate court of Berhampore in the Murshidabad district. They are accused of murdering their three-month-old daughter on Sunday.
According to a police officer, locals said that the two murdered the baby while it was still a girl. There are two additional daughters in the couple's family.
Police said that the two were taken into custody on Sunday after a complaint from Dobir Sheikh, the 60-year-old father of Rintu, who claimed that his son had run the three-month-old daughter over on the floor while intoxicated.
According to police sources, Rintu and his wife have attempted to murder and sell their girls before. This was not the first time.
According to the investigation, Rintu attempted to sell his four-year-old daughter Sohana to a lady in Delhi, but the locals discovered and put an end to it, according to a police official.
The police claim that Rintu and his spouse attempted to murder their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Sumona as well. She was reportedly struck in the head by the pair, but she survived.
Dobir said in his police report that Rintu had been conceited since he was a little boy.
He used to often beat both his older daughters and his wife. Dobir said, "He shattered Sohana's hand a month ago, and Rintu's brother-in-law took the kids away from him.
Family sources claim that Rintu, who earns Rs 12,000 a month working as a wage laborer in Kerala on a daily basis, returned home more than a month ago. He had been miserable ever since Khadija, his third daughter, was born.
A family member said, "He used to abuse his wife continuously for giving birth to only daughters."
"He began beating me after he got home intoxicated on Sunday afternoon. He walked inside the room and discovered his three-month-old daughter when I objected. He threw her to the ground out of a rage. The youngster passed away right away. Dobir stated, "I called the cops right away.
