The Mumbai Indians were forced, not given the option, to release Hardik Pandya in 2021 ahead of the major auction. The all-round player was bound to return, at the first available chance, to the team that made him famous.

When it came to the four players that each franchise could keep, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kieron Pollard were the clear favorites. When Hardik and Suryakumar Yadav were tied for first place, the Mumbai Indians management chose the explosive batter. Since then, Surya has demonstrated that choosing him over Hardik was the right choice.

However, the Mumbai Indians remained steadfast in their belief in Hardik. Their starting lineup now has a void due to Pollard's retirement. The lack of an all-around player was felt by the team, as seen by their appalling results during the previous three years.

It was believed that Cameron Green would be a like-for-like substitute for the West Indian, but he was unable to adapt to the circumstances, so they had to give it their all for Hardik, who as captain had been instrumental in the Gujarat Titans' success in 2022 and 2023.

Hardik was just as eager to go back. He has frequently complimented the team's amenities while also mentioning how nicely the players were cared for there. After being acquired here in 2015 as an uncapped player for Rs 10 lakh, he started his career here.

There are two possible paths to success. One is to have the best atmosphere possible for you to win, which has been a CSK type, or have the best people possible from A to B, which MI had those few years (2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 when they won the title). Hardik mentioned the previous season.

The Titans' director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, acknowledged that Hardik was eager to go back to Mumbai. He now says he wants to play for his old team, the Mumbai Indians. In a release, Solanki was cited as stating, "We respect his decision and wish him all the very best in his future endeavours."

Gujarat Titans will receive an additional sum as a transfer fee for releasing the all-round player, while Mumbai Indians will now have to pay Pandya Rs 15 crore for the all-cash deal. Pandya is entitled to fifty percent or more of the remaining funds, which are not disclosed.

Talks regarding Hardik's comeback began after the 2023 Indian Premier League ended, and they gained steam during the World Cup. Though the team stayed silent on the matter, there was talk that the Mumbai Indians may potentially swap Rohit Sharma for Hardik.

The Mumbai Indians' leadership dispute has begun since Hardik's comeback. In IPL 2024, would Hardik take over as captain or will Rohit continue to lead?

The Mumbai Indians have always been a team that looks to the future. With 30-year-old Hardik in their numbers, they are considering a seamless handoff from Rohit to Hardik when the time is right.

Rohit, 36, does not appear to be in danger of losing his position anytime soon. Given that the Mumbai Indians are renowned for appreciating the players' contributions, it stands to reason that no action will be taken without Rohit's approval.

This reminds me of so many amazing times. Mumbai. Wankhede. Paltan. It is nice to be back. "#OneFamily @mumbaiindians," Hardik posted on social media.

"It is a joyous return home. Every club he plays on benefits greatly from his balance, according to team owner Akash Ambani.

The official announcement was postponed as the Mumbai Indians, who had a salary limitation and needed to free up finances to acquire Pandya, needed to do so.

In order to raise money for the auction operations, they also released Jofra Archer (Rs 8 crore) among the major names and dealt Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore in an all-cash, one-way deal. They currently have 17.75 in accessible cash. Before the auction, every franchise will receive an extra amount of Rs 5 crore.
