Human Error Likely Caused Two Trains to Collide in Andhra Pradesh, Says Railway Official

The East Coast Railway (ECoR) said on Sunday that a human mistake could have caused two trains in the Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh to collide.

According to authorities, the accident between the Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train and the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger Special this evening resulted in at least eight fatalities and twenty injuries.

Most likely cause: a human mistake. The passenger train from Visakhapatnam to Rayagada overshot the signal, ECoR CPRO Biswajit Sahoo informed reporters here.

When defining overshooting, the CPRO said that it happens when a train continues on after a red light rather than halting.

The railway official said that rescue efforts are in progress and that the accident caused the loco of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger train and two carriages of the Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train to derail from the rear.

He stated that hotline numbers have been given, accident relief trains and other emergency equipment have been activated.

There were around 100 people on the two unfortunate trains, according to the CPRO.

Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, expressed regret for the deaths of the passengers in the train catastrophe that occurred in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh between Alamanda and Kantakapalle.

Patnaik also wished the wounded travelers a quick recovery.

The chief minister gave the collectors of the districts of Rayagada and Koraput, as well as the Special Relief Commissioner for Odisha, instructions to provide emergency assistance in rescue and relief efforts.
