GTA to Develop Two Tourist Destinations in Darjeeling Hills at a Cost of Rs 9 Crore

At a cost of around Rs 9 crore, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has created a detailed plan to revitalize two well-liked tourist attractions in the Darjeeling hills and repair the road that leads there.

On the outside of Darjeeling town, the Gangamaya Park and Rock Gardens had sustained damage in May 2009 from Cyclone Aila.

Due to the political climate in the hills, visitors ceased coming to these sites, and they remained abandoned.

The GTA's Norden Sherpa, the head of the tourist division, said that specialists had just been to the two locations and had created a comprehensive project plan to thoroughly renovate them. The locations are around 10 kilometers from the town of Darjeeling.

"We want to repair the road that links to these spots, add adventure sports, and beautify the area. There are also plans to rebuild a few other highways on the locations. The project would cost Rs 9 crore, according to Sherpa.

At Gangamaya Park and Rock Gardens, adventure sports like zip-lining and mountain biking will be introduced. Additionally, the park arena and the environs of Chunnu Summer Falls, a naturally occurring mountainous watercourse, will be beautifully landscaped.

The sites were created under the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council's administration. On slopes of solid rock, landscaping was completed, and a garden with a variety of plants was included. There is a body of water at the site where people enjoyed taking boat rides.

A Darjeeling local noted, "In addition to tourists, residents from different hilly hamlets would turn up at the sites for picnics."

According to sources, even taxi drivers are reluctant to transport visitors to Rock Garden and Gangamaya Park due to the dangerous state of the route.

Damage evaluation

In order to develop the adventure sports infrastructure in the Kalimpong district's Triveni and Teesta Bazar areas, the GTA's tourism department is conducting an evaluation.

The Teesta and Rangeet rivers converge in Triveni, a well-liked location for camping under the open sky. Adventure sports fans are drawn to the Teesta for activities like rafting.

The whole road that connects from Teesta Bazar to Triveni and the campground were destroyed by the catastrophic flash flood that occurred in the Teesta on October 4.

Numerous items, such as rafts and tents, were carried away by the wind.
