Assam Congress president writes to MP CM, seeks FIR against Himanta for hateful remarks against Sonia Gandhi

Bhupen Kumar Borah, the president of the Assam Congress, has written to Kamal Nath, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, requesting that he file a police report against Himanta for allegedly making hateful remarks about the party's MP and former party leader Sonia Gandhi.

In a letter to Nath, Borah made note of the Supreme Court's April 28 directive for all states and union territories to file their own lawsuits against anyone who make hateful statements.

Debabrata Saikia, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, filed a police report two days ago alleging that Sarma, a BJP politician, made a "hateful statement" calling for the burning of Sonia's home.

In his letter dated September 21, Borah claimed that Sarma had remarked, "I want to challenge Kamal Nath, if you are a Hanuman Bhakt, Hanuman burned Lanka, you should burn 10 Janpath," during a public meeting in Vidisha district, Madhya Pradesh, on September 18, 2023.

Sonia's home is located at 10 Janpath.

Borah questioned if Sarma was trying to insinuate that Sonia "has kidnapped someone and kept him/her forcibly in her house/garden," claiming that any practicing Hindu is aware that Sita was taken to Lanka by Ravan in the Ramayana.
The Congress leader who shared the letter on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday argued that such hate speech should not go unrebuked.

"We have already reported the Assam chief minister to the police in connection with this matter. In his letter to Nath, Borah pleaded with the Congress' legal team in Madhya Pradesh to take the same action in his state.

On September 20, Saikia lodged a complaint against Sarma at the Nazira Police Station in the Sivasagar district for what she claimed was his inflammatory remark.

Saikia said in his complaint that the BJP leader is subject to being charged under IPC Sections 153 (provocation inciting rioting) and 115/436 (abetting violence).

Sivasagar district's top cop said they were still reviewing the allegations and weighing their options before deciding whether to file a FIR.
