Kane Williamson will only learn the extent of his thumb injury on Saturday, but as on Friday, he was a content captain as New Zealand easily defeated Bangladesh by an eight-wicket margin to claim their third World Cup triumph.

Williamson expertly led New Zealand's pursuit of a 246-run mark before withdrawing hurt after taking a pitch that struck his left thumb. The captain was participating in his first game of the ongoing championship after finally making a full recovery from the knee ailment he had incurred earlier this year during the IPL.

The 33-year-old displayed class with a traditional, calculated ODI innings that netted him 78 runs from 107 balls in his first international performance in six months.

Williamson stated the following regarding his most recent injury: "It (the left thumb) simply went a bit fat and colorful straight immediately... so have a scan tomorrow, but hopefully it's okay... From a knee perspective, I'm relieved to have survived the game, but the team also did well.

Along with Williamson, Daryl Mitchell also contributed significantly to the chase as he raced to a 67-ball 89 not out. With 43 balls remaining, Mitchell appeared hurried as he hammered six fours and four sixes to decide the game in his team's favor.

Earlier, Mushfiqur Rahim led the way with 66 as Bangladesh fought valiantly to reach 245/9 against New Zealand's disciplined bowling performance.

Bangladesh was in trouble at 56/4 in the 13th over before Mushfiqur's 75-ball innings, along with significant contributions from captain Shakib-al Hasan (40 off 51 deliveries) and Mahmudullah (41 off 49).

Trent Boult snatched 2/45, while Pacer Lockie Ferguson nabbed 3/49.
