Laura Lynch, the founding member of the Dixie Chicks, was 65 when she died in a car accident on Friday night in West Texas, according to a CBS News report from her cousin.
Other members of the US country band, Natalie Maines, Emily Robison, and Martie Maguire, expressed their shock and sadness at learning of Lynch's passing in a joint statement they released as soon as the news broke.
The joint statement the group posted on social media includes a video of them performing the song West Texas Wind live. It highlights the time they spent "playing music, laughing, and traveling together" as a group.
"Laura was a ray of sunshine. It begins, "Her contagious energy and humor gave a spark to the early days of our band," and then recalls how much the late singer-bassist contributed to the group's early success.
"Her indisputable skills enabled us to go from street corner busking to performing on stages throughout Texas and the mid-West. During this difficult time, our thoughts are with her family and loved ones. - "Emily, Martie, and Natalie," concludes the note.
In 1989, Lynch and Robin Lynn Macy formed Dixie Chicks, which is currently referred to as The Chicks. Lynch became the group's lead vocalist following Macy's exit in 1993. But in 1995, she broke up with Dixie Chicks, and Natalie Maines took her place as the group's new lead vocalist.
