Although Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli chose to take a break for the white-ball leg in South Africa, the national selectors have left the door open for Sharma to lead Team India in the T20 World Cup in June.

On Friday, former captain Sourav Ganguly endorsed Rohit, stating that he ought to captain India through the main event in the Caribbean and the US at the very least.

According to Sourav, the two needed a break so they could return to the busy schedule "fresh."

The former president of the BCCI stated, "Once Rohit returns to playing all formats, he should be the captain of India because he has done so well in the World Cup."

"You saw how well Rohit and Kohli played in the World Cup. They are a vital and significant member of the team.

Since the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal matchup against England, neither Rohit nor Kohli have participated in a Twenty20 international match.

Suryakumar Yadav has been tasked with leading the T20 team in the current T20 series against Australia due to Hardik Pandya's injury sustained during the ODI World Cup.

"Because of the different pressures involved, World Cups differ from bilateral series. They have been outstanding in this World Cup, and hopefully they will return to their best six-seven months later in the West Indies, according to Sourav.

"Rohit is a leader. I assume and anticipate that he will serve as captain through the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Beginning with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion, the senior duo will return for the two-Test series in South Africa.

They have taken a break, and quite rightly so, since cricket is such a constant. It is inconceivable to me that after competing in the World Cup final on July 19, you would be playing a T20I series against the same team three days later.

"It is difficult to get back up, particularly in light of the World Cup's demands and pressures. That they have a break makes me happy.

"They'll be rejuvenated for the Tests... there are five against England, the IPL, and the T20 World Cup, so there's never a dull moment in cricket." I hope they continue to perform.

The news that Rahul Dravid would remain head coach pleased Sourav as well.

The fact that they have faith in David does not surprise me. We persuaded him to take on this role while I served as the Board President. And I'm overjoyed to see that his term has been extended yesterday," Sourav said.
