Siliguri's Drinking Water Project Survey Begins in Forest Division's Baikunthapur Districts

On Friday, the survey to install pipes for Siliguri's massive drinking water project began in the forest division's Baikunthapur districts.

The survey also involves foresters from Baikunthapur Forest Division and officials from Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), in addition to representatives of the commercial organization that will carry out the project.

Water for the proposed project is supposed to be taken from the Teesta river near Gajoldoba and sent to the Fulbari water treatment facility.

"A total of 27 kilometers of pipelines need to be installed to link the Teesta with the treatment facility. Of this, the pipes will go through the Baikunthapur forest region for around 10 kilometers. For this reason, the poll includes foresters. They are able to recommend areas inside the forest where pipes should be installed," an SMC source said.

With an estimated cost of Rs 511 crore, the drinking water project has been taken up under the Center's Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut 2.0).

The project's first phase, which has an 18-month deadline, is now the main focus.

The first phase would cost Rs 211 crore and include the construction of an intake well, a power substation, and pipes for water extraction.

Our goal is to finish the first phase in less than 18 months. According to an official, the poll will probably conclude this month, with construction starting in December.

The current water project, which was completed in the 1990s, is insufficient to fulfill the expanding city's need for drinking water, making the water project essential for the Siliguri municipal region.

Currently, the city receives 45 to 55 million liters every day. On the other hand, the daily demand is around 80 million liters.

marijuana plants

In less than 48 hours, Cooch Behar police demolished illicit cannabis farms in 50 bighas. Thirty bighas of cannabis plants were burned on Friday at Chandamari, which is under the Kotwali police station. Another plantation consisting of twenty bighas was burned on Saturday at Madhupur, within the jurisdiction of Pundibari police station, after a similar raid.
