In light of Kali Puja and Diwali, West Bengal saw increased security on Sunday, according to authorities.

More than 5,000 police officers were sent to Calcutta, the state capital, to maintain peace and order and to keep an eye out for festivities using illicit firecrackers, according to reports.

According to them, police officers were stationed at key points across the city, including jetties, train stations, marketplaces, retail centers, and places of worship.

Along with the 35 assistant commissioners, twenty-one police officers holding the rank of deputy commissioner were also on duty, they said.

In addition, they said, security has been stepped up in the neighboring districts of Barasat and Barrackpore in the North 24 Parganas district, where hundreds of people have taken to the streets to attend the local Kali Puja pandals.

According to authorities, the security situation was comparable in Siliguri, Asansol, Durgapur, and Kalyani, among other important cities in the state.

"In light of the Kali Puja and Diwali festivities, we have taken all necessary precautions. In addition to monitoring whether or not prohibited firecrackers are being set off, our officers will uphold law and order," a police officer said.

According to authorities, hospitals have also been urged to be ready to handle emergencies, and fire and emergency services have been placed on standby.
