TMC, BJP leaders celebrate Adivasi icon, freedom fighter Birsa Munda's birthday

The Trinamul Congress and the BJP celebrated the 19th century liberation warrior Birsa Munda's birth anniversary on Wednesday. Adivasis hold him in high regard.

As part of the festivities, Trinamul officials in the district of Alipurduar have chosen to host cultural activities till November 30.

We shall emphasize the shortcomings of the Center and (Alipuduar) BJP MP John Barla in between the cultural activities. The cultural activities would continue till the end of the month, according to Rajya Sabha member and Trinamul district committee head Prakash Chik Baraik. Baraik said, "These cultural events will be part of the Birsa Jayanti celebrations."

The BJP was also quite clear about its political agenda.

The head of the BJP's Alipurduar district, Manoj Tigga, is an MLA. He stated: "We have started reaching out to tea garden residents." We'll inform them about the central water supply programs, the subsidized meals, and other initiatives.

At least six Lok Sabha constituencies in Bengal—Darjeeling, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura—have votes influenced by the tribal community.

Following his attendance at the celebration held at the Hanskhowa Tea Estate in Bagdogra and at Dumuria in Kharibari of the Siliguri district, Raju Bista, the BJP MP for Darjeeling, said, "We will work for the welfare of the people of tea gardens in the region by implementing the Centre's schemes."

The BJP MLA for the Matigara-Naxalbari Assembly seat, Anandamay Barman, did not attend either ceremony.

Barman clarified, nevertheless, that nothing significant could be inferred from his absence from the party programs since he was preoccupied with some family business.

"As part of the celebration of Birsa Jayanti, I traveled to Bagdogra and participated an early-morning road race on Wednesday. Due to certain familial obligations, I was unable to attend other events," Barman said.

"We have organized both events with the participation of respective local organisational units," said Arun Mondal, the BJP's organisational district president for Siliguri. The MP, Durga Murmu, Phansidewa MLA, Ajay Oraon, a Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad (SMP) member, and other dignitaries were present at the functions.

To commemorate the day, the Alipurduar district government also planned activities at a number of locations. In the Naxalbari Block, the Trinamul-controlled SMP commemorated the day. The SMP's sabhadhipati, Arun Ghosh, was present during the event.
