Tragedy Strikes: Chemical Factory Blast in Maharashtra Claims Nine Lives

Thane, Maharashtra, India – The death toll from the devastating chemical factory blast in Thane district, Maharashtra, has risen to nine. The tragic incident occurred at the Amudan Chemicals unit, located in Phase 2 of Dombivli MIDC. Authorities are working tirelessly to clear the debris and assess the full extent of the damage.

The Incident

On Thursday afternoon, a boiler exploded at the factory, triggering a massive blast and subsequent fire. The impact was felt not only within the factory premises but also in adjacent areas, affecting nearby factories and residential buildings. The acrid smell of burnt chemicals now permeates the air.

Casualties and Injuries

64 people, including several women who worked in nearby factories, sustained injuries. They are currently receiving treatment at six different hospitals, with AIMS Hospital in Dombivli caring for two dozen patients. Unfortunately, the death toll is expected to rise further as authorities suspect more bodies may be buried under the debris.

Emergency Response

Ten fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, and firefighting efforts continued until late into the night. Kailas Nikam, from the Disaster Management Cell of Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), confirmed that cooling operations are now underway.

Legal Action

The factory owners are facing serious charges. The Manpada police in Dombivli have registered a case of culpable homicide against them under Indian Penal Code section 304A. Additionally, sections related to explosive substances and hazardous chemicals are being invoked.

Identification Challenges

Tehsildar Sachin Shejal revealed that the bodies of the deceased were charred beyond recognition. They have been sent to government hospitals for post-mortem. Meanwhile, a senior official from the Thane police commissionerate has formed multiple teams to investigate the incident. Government officials responsible for granting permissions and conducting inspections will also be scrutinized.

Chemical Composition

The ill-fated factory primarily produced food colors and utilized peroxides – highly reactive and unstable chemicals. Under certain conditions, these substances can cause violent explosions, as tragically demonstrated in this incident.

Impact on the Community

The blast was so powerful that it was heard up to a kilometer away. Glass windows in nearby buildings shattered, and many houses in the vicinity suffered damage.

As the community grapples with this tragedy, authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and holding those responsible accountable. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time.
