The leaders of the Board convened a few days following India's defeat by England in the T20 World Cup semifinals in Adelaide to design the rules for the game's most condensed format.

India's style of cricket was viewed as anything from brave and aggressive. To venture into unexplored territory, the national selectors selected a young team led by Hardik Pandya that was expected to decipher the T20 code.

For over a year, renowned experts with the firepower to satisfy the format's increasing demands were people like Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Rinku Singh, Tilak Jaiswal, and Ravi Bishnoi. Along with home series victories over Australia and Sri Lanka, the decision paid off with victories in New Zealand and Ireland.

But, the Board was compelled to reconsider after India's stunning performance in the ODI World Cup. Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma were reinstated in the Twenty20 team to play Afghanistan by the ruling elite.

It was clear that India was abandoning their previous strategy and relying on the antiquated armaments. Nine of the fifteen players from the 2022 campaign were chosen by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee on Tuesday for the upcoming competition in the US and the West Indies.

Their failure in the 2022 semi-final was mostly down to the top-order's sluggish batting. Due to their successes in the domestic ODI campaign, two of the top three players from that playing XI will still qualify this time.

After his terrible vehicle accident in December 2022, Rishabh Pant will rejoin the team, while Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson have joined a World Cup squad for the first time.

Due to his strong IPL play, Yuzvendra Chahal, who was unable to participate in any matches during the 2022 Australian edition, is back. The other spin options in the 15-man team are left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav and left-arm all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel.

According to sources who spoke with The Telegraph, Pandya was able to hold onto his vice captaincy in spite of a dismal showing in the 2024 Indian Premier League because to support from both inside and outside the Board.

The main pacers are Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah; Pandya and Shivam Dube, who hasn't bowled in the IPL, are the backup alternatives. The think-tank decided to incorporate four spinners because of the slow surfaces in the West Indies. Without Rinku Singh, Dube is the only power hitter/finisher on the team.

This time, Samson has pushed open the door after falling short against Dinesh Karthik in 2022. The Agarkar-led panel was impacted by his brilliant strokeplay, maturity, and dexterity in carrying off chases for the Rajasthan Royals. So much so that, in spite of showing a sense of purpose, KL Rahul, the think-tank's favorite, was unable to attend.

Out of the five left-handers in the roster, just two are good enough to start and offer the ideal balance. Jaiswal would be the only left-handed player in the top-5 if Dube is unable to secure a spot.

The top-order appears to be unstable. In the IPL, the captain hasn't been reliable, and there are significant problems with Kohli's strike-rate both when batting first and in the middle overs.

Up until a month ago, several members of the Board had expressed doubts about his participation; however, Kohli's incredible run at the bat has ended those conversations.

Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by Press Time staff and has been published from a syndicated feed.

Can Rohit and Kohli demonstrate a desire to put an end to India's lack of ICC titles? The secret to India's prospects is found there.
