96th Academy Awards Announce Shortlists Across Multiple Categories

The 96th Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists for ten different categories on Thursday.

These categories include: Makeup and Hairstyling; Original Score and Original Song; Animated Short Film; Live Action Short Film; Documentary Feature Film; International Feature Film; Sound and Visual Effects.

Barbie, Greta Gerwig's neon comedy, emerged as a strong contender and received mentions in five different categories. Among the film's most notable submissions, which starred Margot Robbie, was an original song nominated by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Mark Ronson, and Andrew Wyatt.

The original sound and score for Barbie were also acknowledged. Barbie experienced an unexpected setback in the makeup and hairstyling category, though, shocking a lot of people despite its overwhelming presence.

Killers of the Flower Moon by Martin Scorsese also had a great showing, receiving four nominations total, one of which was in the original song category. J.A. Bayona's Society of the Snow is another Oscar-worthy contender that bears similarities to All Quiet on the Western Front, the surprising hit of last year that went on to win four Oscars.

Voting for nominations for the esteemed awards ceremony is scheduled to begin on January 11 and run through January 16. On January 23, the complete list of nominees will be revealed.

The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles will host the 96th Academy Awards ceremony on March 10.
