Bangladesh Spins to Victory in First Test, Taijul Claims 10 Wickets
Man of the Match Taijul Islam after his 10-wicket haul in Bangladesh’s win over New Zealand in the first Test in Sylhet on Saturday.

In the first Test of the series, Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 150 runs on Saturday thanks to a double-figure performance from left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. It was his second 10-wicket haul in Test cricket.

In the first session of the final day, Taijul wrapped up New Zealand's innings for 181 runs after scoring 4/109 and 6/75 in the second innings. The visitors were chasing a target of 332 runs.

He was matched by off-spinner Nayeem Hasan, who finished with a 2/40, and pacers Shoriful Islam (1/13) and Mehidy Hasan (1/44) who each claimed a wicket.

"Our focus is solely on the procedure, not the outcome," stated Najmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of Bangladesh.

"There are a ton of Test matches left. We'll be more confident now that we've won.

We want to develop the habit of winning at home, as I mentioned before. We are hoping to be able to carry on with the performance.

Daryl Mitchell struggled to lead the visitors with a patient fifty-eight off one hundred and sixty balls.

After the game, with New Zealand trailing 113/7, Mitchell's contribution offered them a remote chance of winning. He hit Taijul for a boundary with the opening ball of the day and then hit him for a single through the cover to reach his ninth half-century off 99 balls.

In contrast to many of his countrymen, Mitchell appeared assured against the hosts' spinners. However, a bungled sweep shot against off-spinner Nayeem Hasan ultimately resulted in Mitchell's dismissal, effectively ending New Zealand's chances of rescuing the match.

Before Taijul dismissed Tim Southee, the captain, he amassed an attacking 34 off 24 balls, earning his 12th five-for.

On Wednesday, the second and last Test will start.
