Bengal was bowled out for 199 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy encounter at Eden Gardens on Saturday after putting up a pitiful batting showing against Mumbai's 412.

With an undefeated 108, veteran Anustup Majumdar demonstrated his consistency at the bat, with the other players unable to muster any help. Captain Manoj Tiwary's 36 was the next-highest score for Bengal after Anustup's.

The youthful hitters didn't show the discipline and attitude needed to play first-class cricket. When it became imperative that they remain still and exercise care, they went for their shots.

During his masterfully constructed innings, Anustup was a model of patience and endurance, but it didn't really matter since Bengal are fighting for life for the next two days. To stop Mumbai from winning all four innings, they will need to mount a strong defense in the fourth.

"Every young person is inspired by Anustup. "After the day's play, I hope the young players will learn a lot from this fighting innings of his," said coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Mumbai 412 (Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal 6/124) in brief scores. Bengal 199 (Mohit Avasthi 3/63; Anustup Majumdar 108 not out).
