Rajendra Prasad, the nation's first president, dedicated the nation's first steam locomotive on this day. On the same day, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, the leader of the nationalist movement, had the locomotive factory where it was manufactured, in the Asansol Sadar subdivision of West Bengal, renamed Chittaranjan Locomotive Works in his honor.
The locoworks, formerly known as Loco Building Works, were founded with the intention of producing 120 steam locomotives. On January 26, 1950, steam locomotive production had started.
With 431 locomotives produced in 2019–20, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is currently the largest locomotive manufacturer in the world.
