Stressing that economic expansion necessitates a shift in employment from agriculture to industries to services, the Congress said on Saturday that the Manmohan Singh administration has undone the gains made in this regard.

The party said that the "mismanagement" of the existing regime had pushed back the economic transition by twenty years.

According to Congress national secretary Jairam Ramesh, the number of agricultural laborers in India fell by 6.7 crore between 2004–05 and 2017–18 as people chose to seek higher-paying jobs in manufacturing and services instead of low-paying agriculture.

He said in a post on X that this was a historic accomplishment and a turning point in India's transformation to a middle-income nation.

"All the progress achieved, largely under Dr. Manmohan Singh's prime ministership, has been almost entirely reversed within three years of Modi's Anyay Kaal," Ramesh said.

According to him, there have been 6 crore more agricultural laborers since 2018–19, and this return to agriculture occurs before the COVID-19 epidemic.

"Diversification of employment from agriculture to industry to services is a sign of economic prosperity. All nations follow this order, and up until today, India has done so as well," the Congress leader said.

"Rather than take India on the path to prosperity, the prime minister's blundering and mismanagement has set our economic transformation back by 20 years," Ramesh said.

The Congress has been criticizing the administration for how it is managing the economy and voicing worries about "increasing" joblessness and inflation.
